Amnesty International - Interim Head of OD

PERIOD: LATE AUGUST 2010 TO DECEMBER 2010 (preferably full-time)

LOCATION : WILL INVOLVE EXTENDED PERIODS AT THE INTERNATIONAL SECRETARIAT IN LONDON, WC1

REPORTING TO: THE SECRETARY GENERAL

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Advise the Secretary General on the implementation of an appropriate global operating model and organization design to deliver Amnesty International’s strategic plans and global priorities. Within this model, help review and revise the specific management processes and organization structure to be fit for purpose.

2. Create a detailed change management plan, to put in place the new processes, structure and roles. This would include, for example, a substantial project management component, documented organization plan, detailed new role descriptions, and a clear communications plan to enable implementation.

3. Engage key stakeholders in the plan, specifying their involvement and responsibility to support/lead implementation and build their capability in handling change, with individual coaching and development.

4. Identify all risks and create a robust plan to monitor and handle these risks through implementation.

5. Identify other key skills/capabilities, including change management, that need to be installed to fill these gaps ( e.g. technology, internal communications)

6. Bring relevant tools, models, techniques and skills to the organization, building the knowledge and capability of others as well as applying them personally.

7. Anticipate and identify problems in the change process and propose solutions, helping to guide their implementation, as agreed.

A final Terms of Reference and deliverables will be agreed with the selected individual at the outset.

PERSON SPECIFICATION:

· Experience of managing change in an organization with staff and volunteers across different continents and cultures is a strong preference

· Strong consulting skills

· International experience is essential

· Deep knowledge of organizational development and change management tools and techniques, and substantial experience of handling change in different types of organizations

· Strong influencing and communication skills – able to command respect and attention quickly

· Readiness and ability to work at a strategic level and then convert into implementation plans and detail

· Knowledge of the INGO sector an advantage but not essential

· Good listener, advisor, and relationship builder

· Personal gravitas
